Funny Feeling Friday: Steven Gerrard

Amidst all of the talk about high priced midfielders suffering injuries (David Silva), or leading the league in fantasy points (Eden Hazard, Santi Cazorla, or Gareth Bale) we seem to have let one of the greatest FPL assets of the last decade, of our generation, slip through the cracks.

So this Funny Feeling Friday is a reminder, a testament, to the former FPL superstar Steven Gerrard, with a bit of Suso and Sterling thrown in as side dishes for our consumption.

Gerrard, as we all know, is Liverpool’s Captain, and penalty taker (not Luis Suarez) and Liverpool take on Reading at Anfield tomorrow. Gerrard costs 9.4m in the Fantasy Premier League, his cheapest price in years. He was 12.5m just 3-4 years ago. Aguero/RVP-esque like pricing.

And yes he’s older. And yes Liverpool aren’t scoring as many goals. But he’s owned by only 4% of fantasy managers. Gareth Bale & Santi Cazorla, who cost the same amount, are selected by 35% of fantasy managers – combined. That’s about 10x more. But Gerrard could easily outscore both of those midfielders this weekend.

He is vital for Liverpool from set pieces, has 2 home games in his next 3, and for those fantasy managers who must now take out David Silva due to his hamstring problem, he could be a great short term solution. Sure, we expect Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard – the ‘new wave’ – to score more over the course of the season. But a winning Fantasy Premier League manager needs a bit of timing, a bit of form, and a bit of luck on his or her side. A 3-4 game stretch for Gerrard where he outscores the aforementioned Hazard or Bale by 10+ points could be the difference between winning or losing a mini-league at season’s end.

Now to Liverpool’s more affordable parts – Sterling (9% owned and well known on this blog) and Suso (less than 0.1% owned and lesser known though we’ve been writing about him consistently for the last few weeks).

Suso should start with Fabio Borini injured. He costs 5m and is classified as a striker. 5m. If you’re looking for a midfield that includes Gerrard – Cazorla – Hazard – Bale – it’s pretty easily achievable if you can pick up a Suso for your third striker position… just a thought.

So the Funny Feeling Friday is really Gerrard with a side of Suso, and after our Kone 2012 call last time out – we are feeling extremely confident. Arouna Koné – Wigan’s striker, was owned by just 0.4% of fantasy managers before our FFF call last time out. He finished with a goal, an assist, and 2 bonus points (11 fantasy points total) in the 2-2 draw with Everton. He’ll try to do it again this weekend at Swansea. But enough Wigan. And enough of us showing off…

Anfield is where our FFF hearts and minds live this weekend. The oldie but goodie Steven Gerrard and, while less likely, the youngster Suso perhaps?

Good luck to all fantasy managers.
