Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov is undergoing a medical at Fulham, their manager Martin Jol has confirmed.
Berbatov is a former Premier League Golden Boot Winner but has fallen down the pecking order at Manchester United with the recent arrivals and maturity of youngsters Hernandez and Welbeck and new signing Van Persie.
Regardless, this piece of news is not about Manchester United’s loss, but about Fulham’s absolutely brilliant gain. Martin Jol has lost an attacking central midfielder, Dembele, to Tottenham, and Clint Dempsey’s future is still very much in the air, but the addition of Berbatov is absolutely stunning.
The 31 year old Berbatov has previously played under Jol at Tottenham, and was on the verge of signing a deal to move to Italy and play for Fiorentina, but has allegedly backed out at the last hour.
From a Fantasy Premier League perspective, this does cause a bit of upheaval when it comes to Fulham’s bargain priced asset Mladen Petric [6.2m] as Berbatov will surely feature as a regular starter either alongside, or in place of Petric. Bryan Ruiz will still create from deep – though he’s classified as a forward at 6m he’ll operate more as an attacking midfielder, and Hugo Rodallega is another solid 6m option with Premier League experience who now, more than likely, will feature predominantly off the bench.
Berbatov costs just 6.9M in the Fantasy Premier League and if he can return to his old goalscoring form – 15-20 goals a season for both Manchester United and Tottenham – he’ll be a sensation at Craven Cottage, and a sensation for FPL managers.
Martin Jol has completed a magnificent capture. What an absolutely brilliant signing. Congrats to Fulham fans.
