Anders Lindegaard has warned David De Gea that he’s looking to capture the #1 goalkeeping jersey ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.
Lindegaard kept 5 straight clean sheets last season when De Gea was out of form, but after the Dane twisted his ankle in January, De Gea re-gained the #1 role as well as his confidence.
So, who’ll line up in goal for United’s first Premier League game at Everton on August 20th? Clearly De Gea, who is just 21 years old, is the longterm prospect, and with Spain eliminated from the Olympics following a 1-0 loss yesterday to Honduras, his chances of starting the season as the #1 are boosted. If Spain had advanced to the knockout stages, and De Gea had another 2 weeks away from the rest of his teammates, it would surely have been Lindegaard given the opportunity with a month’s worth of repetitions and a full pre-season. But now that’s all up in the air.
From a Fantasy Premier League perspective, De Gea comes in priced at 6M while Lindegaard is 5.5M. A 5.5M starting goalkeeper for Manchester United is not one to overlook if given the opportunity, so neutral supporters who play the official Fantasy PL game will be secretly hoping that Lindegaard will be named Sir Alex’s #1 before the August 20th fixture against Everton.
With De Gea back in training this week, that’s highly unlikely, but you never know. Based on merit (last season’s performances) and not future potential or age, who do you think deserves the #1 goalkeeper jersey at Old Trafford? Let us know by tweeting @NickyButt.
