Funny Feeling Friday: Michael Turner

The former Hull City star is at Sunderland now

It’s not often we choose a defender for our Funny Feeling Friday column – and it’s certainly not often when we choose one playing for a club that has kept just 1 clean sheet in their last 6 league games, but Sunderland’s central defender Michael Turner is our punt this weekend.

The bad news? Turner has yet to return a scored goal this season, an assist, or a single bonus point. Sunderland conceded 2 goals at home last time out against Aston Villa and 2 goals in their previous home match before that – against lowly West Brom. Yup, that’s 4 conceded in their last 2 home fixtures. Oh, and Titus Bramble is back from suspension to threaten the Turner – Wes Brown partnership…

The good news? Turner costs only 4.3M in the Fantasy Premier League, and the fixture list looks superb over the next month. Fulham, Wigan, Wolves, and Blackburn are the next 4 games. I see 2 clean sheets there – a great return.

It all starts this weekend at home to Fulham – who have been up and down on their travels (losses to Wolves and Stoke, and a win at Wigan despite seeing little of the ball for long stretches in that one). Turner is owned by just 0.3% of fantasy managers. Yup, less than one percent.

But that won’t stop me from selecting him as our Funny Feeling Friday and anticipating a clean sheet or two before the Christmas holiday.

Don’t forget – if Turner doesn’t keep a clean sheet, he has a decent chance of chipping in with a goal here or there. At 6 ft 4 inches, he is an intimidating figure from set pieces, and scored 4 goals in the league for Hull in his excellent 2008-2009 season.

So trust me on this one – over the next month, Turner will return 1-2 clean sheets, a bonus point or two, and if you’re lucky, a headed goal. What a gift that would be for the holidays. And priced at 4.3M, that could be the best bargain gift you receive all winter season.

There you have it. Michael Turner. Our Funny Feeling Friday.

Good luck to all fantasy managers this weekend.

    Turner eh? Good luck.

I wouldn’t exactly say he has a “decent chance of chipping in with a goal” but he certainly has shown he can do it in the past.

Haha, brought him in myself, though I had already brought ngog in last round before the funny feeling so it maybe doesn’t bode well, will be happy 6 points from the lad

  3. He did weigh in with a few goals for Hull, but they played slightly more cavalier football than Sunderland. If nothing else, he is due.

Here are some my top 5 value player picks for this weekend, thoughts?

We will see which is stronger: your skill for picking funny feeling fridays or my skill for picking your FFF and jinxing them so that they don’t do anything. Like Obertan last year. But Turner’s in my team. Merry Xmas to me.
