With VDV Out Injured, Will Modric, Adebayor or Bale Shine?

Proof above that Luka Modric is top quality. A great goal against Israel yesterday…

The Tottenham man has endured a turbulent summer – especially the last few weeks – as his tug of war between Chelsea and Tottenham ended up with him staying at White Hart Lane. Despite Liverpool’s emergence, Tottenham must still have hopes that with the signing of both Adebayor and Scott Parker, they can make a run for 4th place.

A lot will be dependent on the (oft-injured) Rafael Van der Vaart but if Luka Modric can get his head right, and Gareth Bale can return to his form from 12 months ago, Tottenham could become the real deal.

Let’s not forget Adebayor scored 24 league goals just a few seasons ago with Arsenal. 24. In the league. In one season. For comparison, Carlos Tevez’s best ever return in the league is 23. Robin van Persie’s is just 18.

VDV scored 13 goals in just 28 league starts last season – a superb return, but he’ll be out for the next 6 weeks with a hamstring injury. That leaves Modric, Bale, Parker, and Adebayor – and to a lesser extent perhaps Defoe or Lennon, to pick up the attacking slack and set piece duties vacated by Van der Vaart.

I expect Modric and Bale to pick up their fare share of free kicks and corners now that VDV is out injured, and it all starts this weekend at Wolves – a team that have started off the season extremely well but could certainly suffer a slip-up against the quality of Modric, Bale, and Adebayor…

Keep an eye on Tottenham’s assets without VDV. Sure, they’ve lost both of their games thus far this season, but they have the quality for a Top 6 finish, and with luck and a run of form, even a 4th or 5th place standing is not out of the question.
