GERVINHO Funny Feeling Friday: Gervinho

Big forehead, Big Potential

Gameweek 5 is nearly here. And it’s Friday. You know what that means: Funny Feeling Friday. We take a look at an “unpopular” (by fantasy ownership terms) or out of form Premier League footballer that should break out in the coming weeks and return a profit for shrewd fantasy footie managers (like yourselves).

So far this season our record speaks for itself – as Danny Sturridge is the latest in a long line (3 years worth) of Funny Feelings who have come good. Call it luck. Call it skill. We just call it “fun.”

Next up is Gervinho. Yup, we’re choosing a player who has returned a negative cumulative score (-1) thus far this Premier League season. I think it’s the first time in FFF history that we’ve gone with a player in negative digits. But hear me out on this one:

Gervinho scored 15 goals last season for Lille and looked capable enough for Arsenal in the first game of the season at Newcastle. He has yet to score for the club in 4 appearances – three in Europe and one in the league – but has threatened and has the speed to expose Blackburn’s fullbacks.

He’s owned by only 1% of fantasy managers but with a price drop to 8.9M – he’s much cheaper than teammate Robin van Persie at 11.9M. But that’s not the only reason that Gervinho is almost a “crazy” pick. The other reason? Alternative striking options. The Fantasy Premier League game is not played in a vacuum and buying Gervinho means ignoring the likes of Dzeko, Adebayor and/or Suarez – three strikers we have written a lot about and three strikers in the same price range as Gervinho that we expect to produce very well over the course of the season.

But you know what – this could be Gervinho’s time to produce. Arsenal will need his speed (and Walcott’s) on the counter-attack at Blackburn this weekend and home to Bolton next week. Two tasty fixtures. One massive forehead.

A goal or assist for Gervinho then over the next two weeks as Arsenal’s fixtures look good for 6 points from 6.

Your Funny Feeling Friday. Gervinho.

Good luck to all fantasy managers.
