Gerrard showcases his average number of groin injuries per season

Steven Gerrard is injured again. Nothing new here as the Liverpool superstar is turning into Robin van Persie – 2007-2009 edition.

Gerrard is currently undergoing treatment for an ongoing groin problem and is set to miss the first few weeks of the season.

Liverpool shouldn’t miss him too much – as he really wasn’t part of Kenny Dalglish’s side that played so well last spring. He was out, then, with, yup – you guessed it – a groin injury.

At age 31 Gerrard’s body could perhaps be breaking down on him a bit earlier than it does on other midfielders, and perhaps we are seeing the winding down of what has been a superb career – almost 500 appearances for club and country, and the rare modern footballer who has stayed with one club his entire career.

But enough of a tribute to Stevie G – let’s get back to our main objective: The Fantasy Premier League. What does this mean for Liverpool’s other playmakers? For starters, Charlie Adam, Liverpool’s new signing from Blackpool, sees his status now elevated to ‘potential’ fantasy purchase despite his hefty 9.0M price tag. With Gerrard out, Adam will hog set pieces, and may even take over penalty duties (though Dirk Kuyt and Luis Suarez may have something to say about that).

In a side that should have plenty of capability going forward (Downing, Suarez, and Carroll are all proven attacking performers) Adam could stamp his authority on the midfield right from the start and help ease the pain that is losing Gerrard for the millions of Liverpool fans worldwide.

We’ll keep you updated in the coming weeks as we preview each Premier League team – one by one – and measure each one of their fantasy prospects and merits, but Charlie Adam is surely in our thinking now that Gerrard is officially confirmed as absent from the start of the season.

Keep him on your watchlist.

I *want* to believe, but even if Adam does take over a bigger role in $tevie MBE’s absence — it’s going to be short-lived. Gerrard will return to PKs and set pieces and mess it up, and we’ll be left burning transfers to fix it.

LOL at the photo caption. Could also read:
