The Transfer Market Heats Up

The Premier League season is over but astute fantasy footie managers should transfer their focus from the locker rooms to the board rooms this summer as the transfer season heats up and potential Fantasy Premier League targets come on to the radar. Here’s a bit of news on the comings and goings of Premier League stars:

  • Staying with moderately priced Bolton strikers and former fantasy footie studs, Daniel Sturridge is set to have a major impact at Chelsea next season according to left back Ashley Cole. Cole said today, “he’s one of the hardest players I’ve ever had to mark,” and it will be very interesting to see what Chelsea’s new manager does with his strikeforce. Will Sturridge get a look?
  • Chelsea striker Didier Drogba is a wanted man and AC Milan is the likely destination. Will Kaka or Neymar – long rumored as Chelsea transfer targets, make their way to Stamford Bridge to take on the star void Drogba could leave behind?
  • Gerard Houllier, Aston Villa’s manager, has stepped down. The French trainer had health problems in the latter half of the season. If Aston Villa can keep hold of their star players (Ashley Young, Brad Friedel or a new goalkeeper, etc.) a new manager could have a real good chance at challenging for a Europa League place next season as long as Darren Bent continues to exhibit form worthy of an England call-up.
  • Sam Allardyce is West Ham’s new boss and will be tasked with the job of looking to keep some of his star players including Thomas Hitzlsperger (embedded above) at the club. Can Allardyce bounce the Hammers back up to the Premier League in one shot? Scott Parker, Robert Green, and Matthew Upson will surely be looking for new clubs…
  • One player who will not be leaving his club is Michael Owen – United’s fourth choice striker. The former Liverpool stud has re-signed and will be at Old Trafford one more season. Neville, Scholes, and Van der Sar will be gone but Owen will remain as a veteran presence in the dressing room. A bit of speculation surrounds his teammate Dimitar Berbatov, the league’s leading scorer this past season, but I expect the Bulgarian to stay put.

Transfer activity should continue to heat up in June and July, and we’ll be here for you every step of the way as you prepare for next season in the Premier League.
