Amazing story coming out of Moncao yesterday if it’s true – Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich actually officiated Didier Drogba’s wedding.
The Russian billionaire married Drogba and his long time partner Lalla Diakite while Sol Kalou and Florent Malouda served as groomsmen. (No Anelka? Lampard? Essien?)
Drogba seems to be a late bloomer off the pitch, just like he was one on the pitch. He didn’t sign his first professional contract until the age of 21 and it took him twelve years and three kids to finally marry Lalla Diakite.
But enough of that ceremonial stuff -let’s make a bold jump / assumption into transfer market analogies. That’s what we’re here for.
Does Abramovich officiating Didier’s wedding mean that he is still wanted at Chelsea? The 33 year old Ivorian striker was rumored to be leaving the club (just as Turkish National Team Manager and former Chelsea caretaker boss Guus Hiddink is set to join) but surely he must be staying if the club’s owner is marrying him in a ‘private’ ceremony with 600 guests in Monaco?
You can’t just officiate someone’s wedding and turn around the next week and sell them to Tottenham Hotspur in exchange for Luka Modric, can you? Can you?
Or maybe this was just a “farewell” ceremony for Didier? Abramovich got emotional, as he does so so often (see: buying Shevchenko; see: firing Mourinho, see: hiring Scolari, etc.) and decided to preside over the wedding despite the imminent transfer of Chelsea’s top hit man.
Whether or not Drogba lines up and leads the attack at Stamford Bridge next season, this was one hell of a fun post to write.
Have a great weekend.
