Calling all Bolton supporters: Swing by the training ground today and let me know if Sturridge is in full training, light training, or nowhere to be seen.
Thanks, Fantasy Premier League manager.
Daniel Sturridge, at the bargain basement price of 5.4M, has been one of the best strikers in the Fantasy Premier League in 2011, but has missed Bolton’s last 2 games (against Fulham and Blackburn) with an ankle problem that he picked up in the first match of Bolton’s double gameweek a week ago.
Sturridge scored in that game, against Arsenal at home, scored twice the week before that against West Ham, and notched 4 goals in his first 4 games – a consistent one per match – on loan at Bolton to start the year. That’s 7 goals in 9 games for Sturridge – prolific.
Superb. Quick. Cheap. The perfect fantasy football striker.
So now, Bolton fans, I get selfish. The Trotters have an incredibly easy schedule in their final three fixtures: Sunderland (out of sorts and out of form) at home this weekend, then away at Blackpool – who until last weekend were shipping goals left and right, and finally at home to Manchester City – a game that looks hard on paper until you realize that City will have wrapped up 4th place and the FA Cup trophy by then, and surely give their second team a run-out in a meaningless fixture.
What kind of damage can Sturridge do if he is fit for all three of these matches? I think 3-4 goals isn’t asking too much if he returns to his pre-ankle injury form. But here’s the rub. As a Sturridge owner, I’ve been left completely in the dark surrounding his impending return. “Doubtful,” “50-50,” “probable,” I’ve heard it all – from article to article, blog to blog, and Twitter account to Twitter account. There’s a better chance winning a game of online bingo than a clear answer one way or the other.
For seven years I’ve been sleuthing around the internet for player injury news, and for the past three years sharing what I’ve found with you week in and week out on this blog – so today, I ask gently, dear internet, dear Bolton fans, help a brother out… Find out for me if Daniel Sturridge is fit for the weekend. Is he training? After your investigative journalism feel free to tweet us at http://www.twitter.com/nickybutt, email us at nevercaptainnickybutt [at] gmail [dot] com or just write a note in the comments…
Use the Navy Seal Team Six if you need to. Surely they don’t have much else to do now that they’ve captured Bin Laden? Do what you gotta do, but just get me that classified intel…
Cheers and Thank You in Advance.
