Funny Feeling Friday: Fernando Torres

Do you need some inspiration? Do you need to catch your mini-league leader? Well, you need to take some risks… So here’s one: Fernando Torres.

Torres is in worse form than Lampard. He’s in worse form than Malouda. And he’s in worse form than Drogba. Sure, those three players are good selections at home to Newcastle this weekend, but they aren’t ‘Funny Feelings,’ – they are fantasy footie powerhouses – owned by 8% (Lampard) 24% (Malouda) and 24% (Drogba) of fantasy managers.

Torres? Costs over 11M and has only 1 goal for Chelsea in the league. Only ONE GOAL.

But here’s the remedy: A start against Newcastle this week will surely bring plenty of opportunity for Torres to finish the season on a high note in front of the Stamford Bridge home fans. If Torres scores at home, then he’s practically guaranteed a start away at Everton next weekend to end the season – a tricky fixture for Chelsea but one that they would enter into with supreme confidence if they manage to beat Newcastle easily.

The negatives? Torres only played 30 minutes against Manchester United and was hauled off after 60 minutes in his last home start – the 2-1 win over Tottenham. The difference this time around? By the time Chelsea kick-off, Manchester United will have already wrapped up the title against Blackburn the previous day, so Ancelotti and Chelsea won’t have much to play for – and Torres could be given the entire 90 minutes to prove his worth, up his confidence, and end the season on a high note.

Not many players can score more than 2 goals in one game. And if you are looking to protect a mini-league lead, or chasing a mini-league title, you need explosive players to help you. One goal from Odemwingie or Fletcher is nice. A brace from Sturridge or RVP even better. And in form or not – Torres is a predator who can take advantage of a poor Newcastle road defense and slot two or three past Krul with no real problem…

So, yeah, Drogba is in form. Yeah, Lampard is on spot kicks. Hell, even Kalou or Malouda sometimes score from midfield, but Torres is an out and out explosive player – and it’s squeaky bum time now.

Good luck to all fantasy managers.
