Gareth Bale somehow won the PFA Player of the Year award today, despite a season that sees Tottenham without any silverware, and potentially missing out on a Champions League place.
The winger was certainly in fine, fine form before the turn of the year, but his performances (and injury problems) in 2011 have been far from impressive, much less worthy of the moniker “best.” Yes, from August 2010 to December or so Bale was a beast, domestically and in Europe – but was the winger really the best?
I don’t think so. Carlos Tevez. Nani. Berbatov. Even Samir Nasri. Or how about Bale’s own teammate Van der Vaart? Charlie Adam? Vidic? Scott Parker? Who knows.
Jack Wilshere won the Young Player of the Year award, justified in my opinion as his passing, work rate, and maturity are pleasing to see at such a young age (19).

I think Scott Parker should be up there. On a losing team, he is constantly oozing inspiration and work ethic.
Charlie Adam on that same criteria ^
It is the professional footballers association award so within his industry he gained the most votes from his peers yes? From a media and fan point of view as you state he has not been the most successful nor the most deserving but it is not about what we think, it is what the professional footballers think.
Ya I agree. He doesn’t deserve it at all. I still can’t understand how Nani was nominated to best young player. Young player?? seriouslly???
I think it should have been Tevez or Nani. I agree with your point with him being to injured since the turn of the year. If he had not been out so much with injury thenit should have gone to him.
I nominate Eboue.
Nani best Prem player of the season, zero doubt.
Vidic for sure.
The PFA award is voted for in early January. This needs to be changed. This is the only reason why Bale won the award.
