I must admit we’ve been on a poor run of Funny Feeling Friday selections in 2011 after a banner year in 2010, but let’s see if we can get back on track with an oldie but goodie.
Remember, this column is reserved for a player who is either out of form, unpopular (from a fantasy ownership perspective), or underrated. We gave you Andy Carroll in August before he was a mainstream selection and that paid off quite well, so let’s jump into the deep end with the expensive Jermain Defoe.
Tottenham have two games this week – a difficult trip to Sunderland without Modric, Bale, or Van der Vaart – arguably their three best players this season, and a less difficult trip to Blackpool which will certainly see one or two of the aforementioned back in action.
So, who’s left to pick up the attacking pieces with that trio out? Why it’s Jermain Defoe (and Aaron Lennon) of course.
Defoe has a whopping ZERO league goals this season. I can’t make this up. Zero goals. 0. He’s played 713 minutes of football and hasn’t scored. That’s the equivalent of 8 full league games. Major drought.
He costs 8.6M and is owned by only 3% of fantasy managers. Out of form. Check. Unpopular. Check. Underrated? Perhaps.
Defoe scored 18 league goals last season. 18. You certainly don’t turn from an 18 goalscorer to a 0 goalscorer in one season. He’s hit double digits in the league for 4 STRAIGHT YEARS. He certainly won’t reach 10 goals this season, but you have to expect he grabs a handful in Tottenham’s stretch run and finishes with 5-8 on the season.
Why not this week then? With VDV out, Defoe will be on penalty kick duties. With Modric and Bale out, he could be in line for some bonus points should Tottenham win. And Sunderland just conceded 3 to Stoke last week…
So there you have it. Jermain Defoe will score his first goal of the season this Fantasy Premier League Double Gameweek. He’ll outscore Berbatov. He’ll outscore Saha. Hell he may even outscore Tevez and Rooney.
Write it down. It’s good as gold.

Hrm, where did you read that VdV is injured? I can’t see anything mentioning that…

I actually put Defoe in my team last week cos he has a good goalscoring record v bolton. he didn’t score but i think he will this week or v blackpool in 2 weeks.
Ibracadabra ,
With VDV to miss out this weekend, but will most likely play the second game of the gameweek against Blackpool, who would you play in this GW? Berbatov or VDV?
I agree. Defoe looked dangerous against Bolton and had many chances. Unlucky not to score. Modric has a bit loss for Spurs been. Best player in the team and maybe the best central midfielder in the prem.
